Big Moose Mountain Property Listed for Sale

News

The recent listing of the ski resort and surrounding property on Big Moose Mountain for sale provides incredible opportunities to expand outdoor recreation, conservation, and economic development in our region.

The Moosehead Lake Region Economic Development Corporation supports the Friends of the Mountain, whose herculean and highly effective work has kept the lower mountain open for skiing season after season since 2012. Together we are exploring options, including nonprofit ownership, to revitalize, preserve, and ensure its financial sustainability and affordability. A fully operational ski resort would also draw more skiers with significant economic impact for our community. It would boost economic activity for other businesses during the winter season, help address workforce shortages by providing employment for seasonal ski employees with other businesses during summer and fall seasons, encourage other recreational activities, and attract new businesses to the region.

During the 1970s, our Mountain was one of the largest ski areas in New England, offering 18 trails on a 1700’ vertical drop, a double chairlift to the summit, a hotel, and views across Moosehead Lake to the snow-capped summit of Mt. Katahdin. At its height, Big Moose attracted 30,000 skiers from Canada, Bangor, southern Maine, and Boston while providing gainful employment for many. The importance of a revitalized, fully-operational ski resort and potential year-round recreational center to the Moosehead Lake region is undeniable.
