As the female business owner of Rockwood Bar & Grill, still a rarity in today’s food and beverage (F&B) industry, Chantel Carroll – a culinary school graduate – strongly believes in supporting her fellow businesswomen in Rockwood, Maine. “There’s several of us in the area,” she said proudly. “It’s very empowering to be a single woman owning your own business. We send customers to each other and bounce ideas off one another. We’re very supportive as a group.”
It is this type of support, the friendliness of Rockwood’s small, close-knit community, and the performance of her outstanding work team that encouraged Chantel to take sole ownership of Rockwood Bar & Grill in 2024 after three years as an employee. Her 30 years of experience in F&B – including at Greenville’s Blair Hill Inn and Stress Free Moose Pub – prepared her to take the helm. “Plus it’s just really fun here,” said Chantel who lives in Rockwood with her boyfriend. “Everybody is so nice.” That’s not to say running a popular Rockwood institution is without its challenges. “You have to be able to handle pressure, think on your toes, and be versatile as every day is different,” she said. “I’ve cleaned, cooked, bartended…pretty much everything.”
It appears that Chantel has found the recipe for success with an incredibly busy summer underway. Her team of 10-12 employees serve an average of 800 people a week with pizzas (50 sold each day) the most popular choice on the menu. Chantel’s goal is to expand Maine-sourced items at the restaurant including beer, cheese, fruit, vegetables, meat, and maple syrup. She has also introduced one of her specialties – smoked meat.
